Welcome
to Garden Perennials...the daylily and perennial plant nursery of
Gail Korn in Wayne, Nebraska.
2012
-- Our 30th Year
The best thing about operating this nursery is the people we’ve come to
know. Our lives are richer because of getting to know you. If this is
your first visit to our website, we hope you find something to delight
you.
We like to learn something new every day. Quite often our plants will
teach us something if we only keep our eyes open. At the top of the
list of really neat things we learned in 2011 is that we have a
resident tree frog. We’ve seen them in gardens in other states, usually
sitting in the throats of daylilies. But we had never seen one in
Nebraska. Our little tree frog liked to sit on the top of the
electrical outlet box on the north side of the house. It wasn’t much
bigger than a half dollar. We learned through the University of
Nebraska horticulture department that Western Gray Tree Frogs are
extending their range to the west. We are not sure whether we have one
or two. Some days it was green and some days it was gray. Was it the
same frog or was it two frogs? We are encouraged that our environment
is supportive of any kind of frog. We hope they stay and learn the
pleasures of sitting in the throats of our daylilies.
You’ll find a number of daylilies are half
price if you want 5 or more. We’ve found this to be popular with
gardeners who like to paint their landscapes with a big brush.
We discovered long ago that the best thing about midsummer bloom in our garden
was daylilies, and we continue to be wowed by the amazing choices in colors and
the forms of flowers. But we could never limit ourselves
to one kind of plant. Within this website, you’ll find picture
galleries of plants that we grow in our gardens and hope you can find
some you’ll love to have in yours. You can peruse the picture galleries
and click on a picture of your choosing to bring up more information
about it. Or you can scroll through the descriptive plant lists and
click on any that are underlined to bring up the picture.
Drought is almost a perennial condition in Nebraska, so you won’t find
plants that need to be kept constantly moist. Our average rainfall is
27”. But if you need plants for dry shade, we’ve found some excellent
choices. These can be grown successfully under trees with very thirsty
roots, such as maples and lindens.
We are sometimes asked about the size of our plants. We send plants
that we would be tickled pink to receive ourselves. We pot them here
for garden visitors, and most require a 1 gallon pot or larger. For the
price, they are a real bargain! Our aim is to get you to try our
plants, and then we do everything we know how to do to entice you to
become regular customers. We know that will happen only if we send you
plants that survive, thrive, and bring you pleasure. Our plants are
always outdoors. We think that is why customers tell us that the plants
they get from us survive transplanting with little if any trouble. We
firmly believe that perennial plants belong outside!
